Please help with the drive to make the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad have National Landmark Status. The following letter is formatted so anyone can help. You do not have to be a Friend's member to help. You can copy/past and email or edit and mail a hard copy:

As some of you may be aware, the Cumbres & Toltec is being considered for National Historic Landmark status. Our NHL team will be in Washington, DC on May 15th & 16th to present the nomination to the National Park Service. We would appreciate if you would give consideration to sending a letter of support.

Feel free to add 1-2 salient reasons you believe the railroad is important to you.

Mr. Loether:

I understand that the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is being nominated as a National Historic Landmark as the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad San Juan Extension and wish to express my strong support for this nomination as it makes its way before the NHL Landmark Committee on May 15-16.

As a member of the Friends of the C&TS I’m gratified that the railroad has attained national prominence as an outstanding example of early twentieth century railroad practice and as an accurate and comprehensive presentation of travel by train throughout our nation during that era. It is the longest and most complete example of late nineteenth-early twentieth century railroading in the nation, complete with track, buildings, structures, freight and passenger equipment, and steam locomotives from that era.

I also understand the railroad has attained national significance as an outstanding representation of the original 1,000-mile Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge railroad network that opened the Central Rocky Mountain region for development. The C&TS represents the finest collection of buildings, structures and equipment designed for that network, and the railroad is still in full use and accessible to visitors today, having survived intact with a great deal of integrity.

Thank you for considering this property as a National Historic Landmark.

Russ, the NHL meeting is May 15 in Washington, DC and that is when our nomination is presented. Keith Hayes and John Hankey will be there to make the presentation.
