Rerailing 484

Unread postby Karl Strauss » Mon May 04, 2020 2:33 pm

The Spring 2020 issue of the Friend's Dispatch contains a picture of 484 on it's side, the accident occurring in 1994. Just wondering if someone has available to share photographs of the re-railing. I presume some heavy lift crane was brought in - unless the CTS has a rescue derrick. Does it?

Thanks

I'm currently working my way through archive videos the Friends had stored in Albuquerque. One of the videos is of the 484 being lifted back onto the rails. Two large cranes were needed for the job. Once the videos are edited, I will post them online.

Okay, video now posted:

In 1999, Cumbres and Toltec engine 484 was derailed whilst on a flanger move with engine 497. Accident most likely caused by a buildup of ice. This video details the effort to re-rail the engine using 2 x 120 ton cranes.
