10/16/18 Tuesday Yard Activity

This video shot Monday night after yard activity was mostly finished. It is unusual in the sense that very little movement is seen after dark, except for photo shoots, and return of dinner or sunset trains. It is also unusual to see two locomotives coupled and pulled to the ash pit. Some nights, hot coals and clinkers can be seen cascading to the bottom of the pit when the grate is cleaned.

If your computer is capable, this video can be viewed at 1080p and full screen.

There is work to be done, even after the season ends Sunday.

Best viewed 1080p and full-screen.

It is difficult to provide a highly defined image when enlarging a snapshot taken from the Chama video cams. However, the rich autumn colors make up for the lack of crisp lines. Guess this is more like an oil painting than a photograph. :)

Locomotive 487 slips into north yard with 8 cars. The low light of late afternoon and a bit of overcast sky dulls the colors, but does not mute the sounds of Train 225 pulling up to the Chama depot. View 1080p and full screen.

A lengthy video taken late in the afternoon. Again, the overcast skies and position of the locomotive enable us to study the work of the hostler. He wears a dust mask and is careful not to be directly across from the hostler on the opposite side of the engine, as he performs steam cleaning tasks. It is curious that they move the locomotive through the the engine house to the south side.

This image is a snapshot taken from the above video. It is interesting to compare the two.
