10/26/17 More Yard Work

Unread postby Rick Calkins » Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:07 am

Lots of sounds and moving locomotives. My guess is that there is an attempt to place a locomotive behind the engine house for repair.

My guess would be that the first locomotive is getting separated from its tender for the winter. Both 484 and 488 are back there and cold.

This video is to help acquaint visitors with various points of interest in the south yard. It is short, enjoy.

That feature is there to keep costs down. If it wasn't, there are some that would never turn them off and rack up expensive bills. Every second of use by every person cost the Friends money.

Jason thanks for your reponse.

I ran a full service website to accommodate the all the schools throughout the state of New Mexico. At the time, I owned a textbook depository and we fulfilled school orders for more than 10,000 state adopted textbooks. Like you, I went offsite to have the website hosted. It was not unusual to have two million hits a year. Those hits did not all turn into orders since our contract with publishers limited our activities to the state of New Mexico. Most of these visitors came from throughout the United States. Yes, we offered full-color illustrations and description of all items sold. Each school in the state was able to create a purchase order for the materials they needed as they perused the title database.
.
I understand the costs of operating a website. I paid the bills. I also understand that the three cameras at Chama stream 24/7 and that is why you chose to have them hosted by BrownRice. That turned out to be an operationally smart and financially wise choice as shown by the following illustration. It seems that a select few are able to stream and record the three cameras a full day, without experiencing a pause, and then extract the important points to to the Web Cam page for active viewing and archive purposes. I am not asking that I be afforded this same opportunity just because I am a Friend of the C&TSRR. Rather I am suggesting that you upgrade the source code provided by BRI and change the "temporary Pause" from their default of 10 minutes to a default of 30 minutes. This would lessen a convoluted viewing experience suffered by most members and guests. The few possible abusers will still be curtailed by the new pause limitation of 30 minutes. The rest of us will have a better viewing and recording experience. Semper Fi.

Does anyone have any idea of what happened to the empty hopper and drop bottom gondola in need of repairs that left Chama late yesterday. It seemed like a really odd move. Looks like 487 is the last hot locomotive in Chama.

Thanks,
Bill

My guess, based on how long the 487 was out of Chama, is they left them at Cumbres for 19 to pick up.

Look at left edge of shot, this is probably the DBG

Here are what still images I was able to get today.

That looks like it alright. I'll have to keep my eye on the Cumbres cam to see when it gets moved.

Thanks again Sharon!

We get to see our first locomotive without tender, not saying that either of both 484 and 488 have had theirs removed and stayed on the south side of the house.

If you look real close sighting down along the line of Friends cars and the OY you can see where the tender is parked and there may be more then one there

Rick, yes there is a private page set up for Larry and Sharon to record. The work they do (and have done) more than earns them that special privilege. But, more than that, it's mostly about simplifying their lives so they aren't tied to the computer all day. And, this isn't to impugn your efforts or those of others that regularly post captures. Your efforts further enhance the forum are greatly appreciated. Larry started this project a few years ago because he had the time and technical know-how to do it. When he no longer had the time, he recruited Sharon. There really isn't a need to have more people involved at this point. Should that change, you are definitely on my short list to contact.

The 10-minute timeout is fair (in my opinion) and this was agreed upon by a committee of team members and FCTS leadership. 30 minutes would surely make things a bit easier for some people, but again, time is money. Many others would watch an arrival or departure and not stop the stream or close their browser. That could potentially double or triple our cost. For what it's worth, I always use the public page with the timeout. I afford myself no special privileges. The one exception is occasional high resolution photos (not video) taken directly from the cameras.

If enough people talk to Tim Tennant and request a way to subscribe to the cameras (with an annual fee), we can provide unlimited access. Short of that, it's just not affordable. Every penny we save goes towards preserving the railroad... and that's why we're here.

Semper Fi, buddy. *Hey, we have a birthday coming up soon. #242 if my math is correct.
