7/31/17 Last chase, 215 back to Chama

Unread postby Sharon Evans » Fri Aug 18, 2017 1:33 pm

The final afternoon was spent with my final chase of the trip as I went out to Los Pinos valley to start my chase back into Chama. I was able to get a number of good photographs.
1 487 leads traini 215 toward the horseshoe curve at Los Pinos.jpg
K36 487 leads train 215 as it heads toward the horseshoe curve at the head of Los Pinos valley

2 487 passes Los Pinos tank on the opposite side of the valley.jpg
Looking over Los Pinos tank we can see 487 almost at the curve

3 Around the curve and headed up the final grade to Cumbres.jpg
Headed up the near side of the valley, 487 continues the climb to Cumbres

4 Blowing for an access road to the off grid homes, 487 contniues its climb.jpg
487 is finishing its crossing blow for the access road to the off grid homes

5 487 comes over route 17 at Cumbres, known to fans as 4th crossing.jpg

6 487 is stopping at the Chama depot, run over.jpg
The trip over, 487 has come to a stop at Chama

I think the whistle shot was Apache Crossing.

Thanks Tom, I never knew the name of that road. It is the one west of Los Pinos but before Tanglefoot.

Yes that is it. All the way down leads to a nice view of the lower end of Los Pinos valley and a phone booth near the curve to Osier.

My next question is, how is that road? Would a 2 wheel drive Santa Fe be able to make it down there so I could shot the train across the valley?

I've never had the time to follow it myself, but I've been told it deteriorates pretty quickly to little more than a trail. Don't know if you can get far enough down into the valley to see the line across the river. One of these days I'll check it out.

I'm sure Roger could tell you.

eze peze, it is a driveway for a ranch down in the valley. You can drive around down there as long as it isnt wet. Getting to the river maybe a risk but you can get close.
