Sad News - Ed Stabler Has Passed

Unread postby Jason Rose » Wed Feb 01, 2017 8:12 am

I just got word from Ed's daughter that he passed away on Jan 26 due to complications from a minor surgery he was having.

I can't begin to express my grief about this. Ed was a great guy and a good friend. I will miss him dearly.

High Greens, my friend. I'll see you on the other side.

Here is a video project we did together a few years ago. It's the best tribute I can offer right now...

There is a "pickers memorial circle" this Saturday in San Angelo from 10-4. Ed's daughter said he didn't want a formal service. She is checking Ed's email, so you can reach her there for details.

Here is another video. In this one he's giving a concert in Rusk, Texas on Opening Day 2013. Near the end, Earl Knoob joins in. This was a great day and will be a treasured memory of good times with good friends.

For those that don't know, one of Ed's most fond memories was the opening of the Cumbres & Toltec in September 1970. Ben Greathouse was the Engineer of 483. The night before they set out from Antonito for the first time, Ben had to get some rest. So, Ed stayed up all night to watch over 483. He spoke very fondly of that experience and I can only imagine how special that must have been.

I meant to post this earlier and apologize for the delay.

Ed was a great and fun (and funny) soul. He and I picked tunes together on several occasions, including one night a couple years ago in Chama. He'd come through ABQ a couple times a year and, although we didn't always connect, we always kept in contact. He played a well-attended house concert here about a year and a half ago. Some of you may recall he played a post Friends-dinner concert at the High Country a few years back as well.

As as aside, his father, "Doc" Stabler was one of my professors (Biology) at Colorado College in the late 60s.

His guitar strings may be silent but his voice (and pickin') carries on on his CDs.

I'm honored to have known him,

It's taken me 18 months to get this done, but I finally put together some thoughts, photos, and videos of Ed.

Thank you for that wonderful remembrance, Jason.

Ed was also the very first person to review and make comments and corrections on the (very) rough draft of my Silver Rails: Railroad of Leadville book. His suggestions were from the heart and the book is better for them.

Miss ya, Ed!

That's very cool, Chris. I didn't know that.

Ed was an astoundingly well-rounded guy.
