12-11-15 Engine in steam

Unread postby Mike Maguire » Fri Dec 11, 2015 10:30 am

There's an engine in steam in the south yard - must've come out of the back of the house.

I looked in earlier and could see smoke or steam coming from the house stack, but it stopped later.

Mike they headed East out of the yard earlier - which I missed, but had word on the move. They came back and did a bit of switching in the South yard, now looks like they are done. I'll get video up soon for those that missed things.

Here's a couple vids from the moves -

12-11-15 - 489 returns to yard after short shakedown run.

12-11-15 - 489 does some brief switching of a couple cars in the South yard, then heads for the ash pit.

Moving tenders around now. I think it's 484's tender on the main, now they are after 488's tender. I know 463's is closest to the tipple.

I've come in on this in progress. Saw one tender over near the coal dock. Then it went back to normal as before. Did they shovel remnants out of it or rearrange their order?? Couldn't tell as I was in and out of my Jeep and could only peek while not driving. Interesting moves!!

They just re-arranged the order for whatever reason. I'll get video up overnight sometime, for now I have to get off to work - won't get home till midnight and will work on it then. Nice to see activity today!

Thanks for the explanation Larry! Nice to see a little action again under steam. Will try to check in early to see the preliminary moves and trips during the day Saturday.

Have a question that's above my "pay grade": if 489 was to have a mechanical problem tomorrow and couldn't run is #15 powerful enough to pull the train up grade to the traditional point of Dalton that these Christmas Trains usually obtain? Just wondered what the Plan B would be. Anyone know?

Thanks, either I didn't know or had forgotten. Hope no glitches and it goes off without problem.

If you get bored and want something to watch between the Christmas trains today, here is a compilation of the tender moves from Friday. Basically 484's tender was moved out to the main, then 488's tender was moved to the coal dock track, 484's moved back to where 488's tender was and 488's tender moved to where 484's was. The reason? No idea - guessing they may want 488's tender inside perhaps after this weekend, for some work. Video runs about 16 minutes overall.
