Very skittish birds here as well, I've seen them, heard them more - never got a good photo. Handsome looking bird, and great shots!!!

I guess being skittish is their nature.

Probably also called a "Red-Shafted Flicker," common in your area. The male has a red mustache, whereas the female has none. The inside tail linings would be red cast, in this variety, and in the "Glided Flicker," it would be yellow. Nice photos! Hope you heard his song, too. It is a repeated "Flicker, Flicker, Flicker."
