Bring a nonperishable food item and ride for free was the way rides were done today. The sanders don't help with the engine in reverse.

Now it makes sense why they shifted on the last train to normal nose forward operation heading up hill. Thanks for posting!

What was the reason for running the engine backwards?

So the engine would be up front and going forward on the way back to Chama.

For me the best part of the video was the echo of the engine bark off the mountains as he tried to get traction and going again, great as usual Roger.
