Car Inspector's House Repairs

The car inspector's house when we arrived Monday morning. The large pile of lumber in foreground was left over from the impressive efforts of the crew before us that re-sided the lower portion of the wall.

Monday mid-afternoon the scaffolding was set and the upper portion of the siding beginning to come off. The lumber pile in foreground is being sorted, material that looks useable being stacked aside, scrap getting loaded on trailer to transport down to Chama yard.

Cleaning up on the east side.

Many hours were spent inside removing floor boards upstairs and vacuuming up who knows how many years of dirt.

Tuesday mid-morning, nearly all siding boards have been removed (except those at the very tip of gable) and wall is ready to be repaired.

Wednesday noon. Sills and studs repaired, sheathing boards installed and tar paper applied as far up as necessary for second course of siding.

Close of business Thursday a full second course of siding boards have been installed. Special challenges were presented by the tilt out of the 1st floor wall, tilt in of the 2nd floor wall and all siding boards seamed at the intersection of the two! Notice how clean the foreground is now, that after 3-4 full trailer loads were taken down the hill. Guys in yard were kept quite busy cutting the scrap to length for use in starting fires in boilers.

Friday 1:00, the third course of siding boards completed! This required "borrowing" some additional scaffolding from the section house work. (It is no wonder the guys working on the tank cars in the Chama yard couldn't find scaffolding.)

Of course each the highlight of each day was the two times the train came through. This scene was generally followed by us packing up for the day and most times we still didn't beat the train to the yard. (Photo by Dan McGunegle)

Bob Conry was an excellent team lead, will likely request being on his team again next year.

Thanks for all the great photos Vance, looks like you guys kicked butt with all the work accomplished. Cumbres Pass is one of my favorite spots on the railroad so I find it personally gratifying to see work done on the structures up there. With all the work done on the carman's house, and the section house shoring done after the work sessions LOTS of headway has been made preserving these buildings. Thanks!

Thank you posting the photos and or the commentary/insight.
That's an Incredible amount accomplished in a short time frame.
I wonder if we shouldn't start calling those who work on projects at Cumbres the "Top of the Hill gang".

When we were sandblasting tank cars we needed some scaffolding to get to the top of the tanks. Our site leader said "all available scaffolding is up on the hill with Bob Conroy's crew". Looks like you guys put it to good use. :smiley24:
