"Cosmetic" restoration of 483 is a Friends work session project. Further work is scheduled for this summer.

That is very good news - I understand from reading interviews on other posts that a lot of the parts have been stored in box cars, etc. since asbestos removal some years ago but that other parts, like the side rods, were not available. Thanks for the update!

John, I was the project leader back in 1999-2000 for the project to remove the asbestos from 483 and 492. Because asbestos removal had to be done by a licensed contractor, the parts our crew removed, labeled, and stored in a box car were mostly limited to parts like hand-rails, stanchions, piping, and sand dome covers which we could remove without disturbing the asbestos cladding. The asbestos removal contractor then disposed of the boilers's jacketing along with the asbestos. As I recall the air pumps which we also removed were then rebuilt by an outside contractor and returned to the railroad's inventory.
