Chasing the narrow gauge ....

Does anyone know of a publication that provides detailed information on the ROW between Chama and Durango? A few years ago, I tried to chase it and did a decent job for a good bit, but I really couldn't identify much on the half closer to Durango. I'd specifically like a map showing the old ROW in relation to current landmarks, if such exists.

I'd hate to have to admit how much time I've spent at work scrutinizing Mapquest and Google Maps for traces of old roadbed.

I ordered the map set from the CRM store. The map set is the tax valuation maps and they are very detailed. Russ

David, I don't know of a publication that documents the RoW. But, I use a program called TopoZone USA on my laptop. It comes with a GPS receiver that attaches with a USB cable so you can determine your exact position.

I believe the USGS topo maps have the grade on them. But a good friend of mine, Everett Lueck, took the time to draw in the line using old maps.

Needless to say, this made chasing the San Juan Extension incredibly easy!

How about Chasing Ghost RR of Colorado by R. Ormes. It shows roads and rails. Iv used it to help. Also Dave Dye has a web site that traces the routes to goolge earth or an equivilent. Quad maps are really great if you get the 50 or 60 versions as they show the grades.
