C&TSRR = "Y" = Chama, New Mexico

Unread postby Roger Hogan » Mon Apr 10, 2017 4:31 pm

This is how the C&TSRR turns trains. The "Y" was extended in 2014 so the railroad could turn long trains.

You talk the railroad into moving the stock cars and I will do the video.

No, the stock pens are not used today. The railroad hasn't haul stock since the early 1960's. The Friends restored the pens for aesthetics and historical accuracy.

We discussed the idea of running a live stock train for a photography special a few years ago. The idea was to load cattle in Chama and run 'em up to Lobato or maybe Osier for off-loading. Then feed 'em, water 'em, reload, 'em and head back. Would have been pretty dang cool. The railroad wasn't opposed to doing it, so long as volunteers cleaned the cars out afterwords. The problem was the the ranchers. The insurance to "borrow/rent" cattle for the day is cost prohibitive... and that's putting it mildly. There's also the logistics of feeding and watering the critters in Chama and wherever you take them.

It would be a helluva neat trip, but VERY expensive
