11-17-16 Another Day of Steam

Unread postby Larry Sullivan » Thu Nov 17, 2016 5:43 am

In the early morning darkness there is a fair amount of steam in the air, and coming from the shops stack - so likely 489 will be used again today.

After another stop at the water tank, 489 heads out once again.

After another stop at the tank (with steam to spare), #489 is away on its travels again ...

Silly idea - are they using it to consolidate fresh ballast ?

This was the scene in the yard just before the cams went down. Power goes off easy in bad weather in Chama, so I suspect that's the issue here.

Power outage. Quite common in the winter up there.

Looks like a good dusting of snow today at Cumbres, didn't melt off as in the yard.

#489 has been at the ash-pit for about an hour thus far - much hissing of steam, but nothing to see ...

Fortyfive minutes later it looks like the fire's been dropped ...

#489's return. Fire dropped & running on reserve, backs into the west stall.

It is Thursday and they do not work on Friday, so dropping the fire over the weekend makes sense. We will have to wait until Sunday evening/Monday morning to see if the 489 runs next week. Also we could get 487 coming back with the coaches, but probably will be after Thanksgiving since they will probably be off after Wednesday.
