Chama Engine House Lathe and Mill

Howdy Folks,

Don't know why I hadn't gotten around to this yet but I am now a member of this forum. :-) For those of you who don't know me I am the proprietor of San Juan Decals and have provided lettering artwork for the lettering restoration of several of the cars the Friends have done in recent years. Look forward to doing more in the future!

Looking for data on the engine house lathe and drill press. The lathe is a Niles 54-in. WL42 Wheel Lathe S/N 23643 and the press a Gilbert G-521 or 621? Can anyone provide access to drawings of these tools as I have a customer looking to make models of these pieces for his engine house.

I haven't seen any pictures of the MOW passenger car 053, UTLX GRAMPS car nor the caboose I've sent artwork for. Any chance you could ping those responsible for an update?

the tank car is under work session pics for 2016. Car 053 is over in Antonito IIRC and I think there was pics of it under work sessions also. Not sure of which one. Which caboose?

Don Atkinson is the guy who did the work on 0579. I will check out the 053 cook car as I am team leader to replace the brake pipe the end of the month.

0579 sits in Chama on the Sheep Tank lead or to the swamp awaiting stenciling.

Thanx all for the updates on the cars. However, do you know of anyone in the shop that put the lathe and press together I can contact? Sonny? Is he the one who works on all of the operations related stuff?

Back in 2000 Bob Wright was CMO, and Soni, as an engineer at the time, was not involved in shop operations. As I recall when we got the lathe Bob had to make modifications to it to accommodate mounting complete driver sets with counterweights. Bob's no longer alive, and I doubt there are any drawings of either the lathe or the drill press at Chama, however, there is a small chance the Friends Library in Albuquerque might have drawings. I suggest you contact Vern Glover or anyone else involved in the library. The Friends number is 505 880 1311.
