Locomotive 463 Status

As a result of recent discussion with Commission members and after review of an assessment performed by American Heritage Railway personnel, the Friends Board has determined that Locomotive 463’s rebuild will most likely be completed over the upcoming off-season. It was hoped that the project, which is in its final assembly phase, could have been finished yet during the operating season. Although there is a chance the completion could yet occur it doesn’t appear there is the mechanical personnel available to dedicate the time required that would make that a reality. The organization apologizes for this event and will be refunding all those who had held reservations on the cancelled May 15, 2012 charter.

The Friends are working with AHR and the Commission on a plan that will enable the 463 Project to be completed. We continue to appreciate the support that has been provided by so many.

Looking forward to reading the After Action Review of the #463 Restoration Project when #463 is in revenue service. I am sure that such a body as the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec would be professional enough and have members who have conducted AAR's in the past to conduct a full AAR on this project for guidance on future major projects. I suggest that interested parties NOT familiar with AAR's research how an AAR is conducted.

With HRM leaving next month, will #463 still be rebuilt over the winter?

Let's hope so. There often seems to be layoffs over the winter so perhaps a crew would be available.

At the Friends banquet this past Friday (10/26), the Friends Chairman of the Board, Craig McMullen, announced that 3 of the Antonito crew will be assigned to resume the work on 463 beginning Nov. 5th. He also said that the inventory which was done by the D&S showed that no major components were missing in Antonito.
