Just Sittin' Around

Watching the inactivity on the webcams makes me wonder... Is there any other place in North America where you will find a live steam locomotive just sitting around doing nothing... for days on end?

Question 2: Wouldn't it really be more efficient to acquire a diesel for off-season and MOW work?

If you ("Old Guy in NJ") know of any FRA-compliant NG diesels in working order available at a reasonable price, please advise.

Also, I'm not sure if Jason, the moderator of this site, the Friends Forum, has had a chance to include a notice about using actual names, not handles, on the page inviting comments about the web-cams (as is done on the index page for this forum), but disclosing posters names is highly recommended.

That notice has been posted and is very hard to miss. In fact, most visitors have obliged.

You would have to order them from a manufacturer such as GE. Modern railroads do this all the time because they are way cheaper (I'm including operating costs) than steam locomotives. That means new diesels are attractively priced, at least in a relative sense.

The Commission can borrow money, can't they??? They are a government entity, so it seems like they would be good at it.

Greg, I believe they are very limited in the amount they may borrow. Something on the order of $250,000 MAX

Does anyone know of a schedule of activity at the yards? It would help to see things when they are actually happening... I am an old guy sitting around too, down in my back this week, or I would go to the beach.
Hope you in NJ are OK and our prayers are with you.

There is a schedule/Train Bulletin at the bottom of the camera page.

As I hear updates, I'll post them there. Don't expect much to happen until spring.

FYI, it's 6 degrees warmer in Chama today than here in New Jersey!

What is that "thing" with the black and yellow stripes sitting on the engine house lead?

I bought the latest copy of "Locomotive, The Magazine of Motive Power". There is an ad for GP40 type diesel locomotives. If I'm reading it right, these things are going for $160,000 to $250,000 range "qualified and ready for service". Seems too good to be true. But assuming it is true. Just think of the penalty the railroad pays for being 3 foot gauge!

3 foot + Steam = expen$ive
