Northbound Passenger 10/24/12

Watched a northbound passenger train with what appeared to be six cars, enter the yard at around 9:00 am, pull into the siding and whistle for a stop. Two other locomotives were visible in front of the roundhouse, one under steam. Wondered whether this was the 11:00 am train being readied, or the hospital train scheduled for today only. And what exactly is a hospital train?

This is the "Hospital Train" to shuttle coaches over to Antonito for repairs/maintenance during the winter.

I don't know where the term comes from, but I'm sure others on the forum can fill us in.

I think someone coined the term because the cars en route to repairs were designated as "cripples".
