Unfortunately, they should be used only with fresh snow falls for the sake of preserving the historic equipment, never in the spring when the line hasn’t been cleared all winter long. The snow over 5 to 6 months will have many layers of ice from both thaw and freeze cycles and compression. That ice will beat up a rotary something fierce.
