489 has come out to the pit extremely early.

OK, so 489 remained somewhere, probably east of Cumbres, yesterday and it was at Cumbres same time as 215. Now 489 heads out of Chama going east light locomotive before 0700 MDT. What is going out inquiring minds want to know.
I see a loader at work on Cumbres at the ballast pile. Could 489 be on a work train up there?

I was just going to post that grab since it answers my guess that 489 was doing work train duty. You also got the front end loader being used to fill the ballast cars.

The man lift was by the depot on the track side. We need an on scene report as to whether they are painting it BROWN.

Well 216 left Chama on time this morning and 215 arrived Chama almost on time, wonder what happened to 216.

Wonder if they changed crews on the 489 sometime during the day. The road crew had to be called on duty at 0630 this morning and here it is 1805 and she is finally back from moving ballast all day.

Here's today's videos -

489 prepared early to head to Cumbres and it's work train of ballast cars. Rare to get the early morning, B&W look so decided to upload it. Watch the last minute or so, right after the first scoop of coal dumped, looks like the whole cab is glowing fire -- hosing things down, so just steam, but makes for an interesting look.

489 heads out light on the way up the hill.

Train 216 Departure, once again we have our waver in the open gon -- what a life, gets to ride the rails daily! :smile:

Train 215 arrival with 463 in the lead. Not on video, but there was some switching in the South yard done after turning the train.

489 returns light after a days work.
