#15 comes out of hiding

Unread postby Edwin Frey » Mon Oct 27, 2014 7:07 am

This morning, diesel #15 has been lit, and it looks like it will be doing the shuffling around the yard. At the moment, it's percolating in front of #463. None of the steamers appear to be hot.

Watching now as the 15 has moved 463 to in front of the round house and is now back at the engine house getting ready to move another loco. Sounds strange to have diesel noises in that yard.

#15 then went into shop, more likely behind shop - and pushed #487's tender out, brought it down onto the main and back up - stopping out of camera sight near the sand house. Front end loader then employed to bring the tender in front of the two passenger cars that are sitting on the side track.

Brief outline of the rest of the morning --- after moving 487's tender, #15 headed down into the yard and did a bunch of shifting cars around -- all to come out with one flat car, now taken behind the shop. Then they came back out and moved one locomotive inside the shop, then hooked up to the other locomotive (489 and 484 I assume, but don't know which is which), pulled that locomotive a few feet forward then shut down. Perhaps done for the day or perhaps just lunch time.

The tender was still full of coal. Aren't they going to empty it and not leave it like this all winter?

Yes, typically they empty the coal and clean out the dust before the winter really sets in. The corrosive action of wet carbon on steel eats the heck out of tenders if left for long periods of time.
