Because asbestos removal had to be done by a licensed contractor, the parts our crew removed, labeled, and stored in a box car were mostly limited to parts like hand-rails, stanchions, piping, and sand dome covers which we could remove without disturbing the asbestos cladding. The asbestos removal contractor then disposed of the boilers's jacketing along with the asbestos. As I recall the air pumps which we also removed were then rebuilt by an outside contractor and returned to the railroad's inventory.
