Moving Red River & Gulf Railroad #106

This past weekend, volunteers from the Southern Forest Heritage Museum in Long Leaf, LA moved Red River & Gulf #106 from the Car Shop where she has resided for the past 63 years. If you aren't familiar with this project, please see the following page:

Here is the video of the move. Mike Miller (Team Leader) has been working diligently for months to get the roadbed, track, and running gear ready to roll her out. His efforts paid off and the actual event was surprisingly easy.



Now that the immediate crisis has been averted, the staff is working out what happens next. Stay tuned...

Nice video - I presume the next steps are to thoroughly rework the track in the shed and then move 106 back. Too bad the winch tree will have to go - might consider a diversion around it for historic purposes.

Thanks, Pete. Yes, the next steps are to repair the fill and rebuild the track. If this project generates enough interest and a corresponding influx of cash, it's conceivable that 106 won't go back into the Car Shop and will instead be moved the Engine House for restoration. It's a long shot, but I'm hopeful.

That tree, while extremely useful for this move, now has to go. It's in the middle of the gauge and there's no way around. There's a 6-8' drop on both sides. I think we should cut it up and stack it on the log car as a display... forever immortalizing it for it's service.
