Some 70 Friends' volunteers checked into Work Session D on Sunday and Monday, June 24-25, anxious to begin their work. While the majority of them are working on projects in Chama, nine volunteers are in Antonito, working on restoration of the frameless tank cars and also continuing to work on the car shelter.

Chama teams are focused on a wide range of projects: yard landscaping, right-of-way brush and tree control, wood preservative treatment, milepost & whistle board maintenance, sheep pen and railroad property mowing, restoration of RPO 54 and Derrick OP, repairing sheep car 5633, rebuilding gondola 9558, masonry pointing for the pumphouse walls and chimney, converting boxcar 3585 to the new tool car, cosmetically restoring engine 483 -- in addition to the support functions of food preparation, tool car operation, paint supplies, chronicling, report writing, etc.

There were lots of trips to the water coolers in 93 degree heat!

Original pipe flanges that connected to the donkey steam engine on Derrick OP were cast iron; it was decided to upgrade, and TL Russ Hanscom machined and welded the four new flanges shown here. Welding high pressure steam fittings definitely separates the "men from the boy" welders!

That looks like schedule 80 pipe in the last photo. That is some seriously thick pipe that will withstand lots of pressure, but takes some high amperage to weld. I am sure Russ is up to the job having worked on oil well platforms.
