Dave Cargo who was governor of New Mexico in the late 60s and early 70 has died. Dave was instrumental in his support of both states buying the CATS, and without his considerable push from the top, it is very unlikely that our beloved narrow gauge would even exist today, except in memory. John, thanks for posting. We can say that Governor Cargo was very responsible for helping to save the Cumbres & Toltec. He was certainly a unique individual and cared a great deal for the State of New Mexico and its people.

May he rest in peace. I was lucky to of spent many hours with him and Carl Turner on the swing on the front of the Hotel. So many stories and YES they were close friends.

Chris Novak who owned the Gandy Dancer bed and breakfast inn in Chama, said that Gov Cargo would stay at his place sometimes, and even before he unpacked his suitcase, he would go down to the Chevron station at the Y (highway) and visit his friend Eddie Vigil. Eddie was the mayor of Chama back when the states first bought the R/R, and he and Dave Cargo remained close friends as well 40 years later.
