Norma Gail Smith, "Aunt Gail" passed away in her sleep last night at her home in Montrose, CO. She was 72 years wise. She is survived by her friend Stephen Flowers of many years, the Osier Crew who loved her very much and many thousands of people who rode the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
She was a retired Registered Nurse for the State of Alaska. She moved to Alaska after the "big quake" in the 1960's working in the Psychiatric Wards night shifts. She also worked on Pump Station Number 9 on the Alaskan Pipeline Project. She had many stories about her life in Alaska that would keep you in stitches.
Starting in 2003, she worked in the Kitchen at Osier to make many thousands of rolls and Cinnamon Rolls for the trains coming to Osier. She made and gave away hundreds of loaves of bread in her time.
With the exception of a couple of hospital stays, we are glad that Gail was able to stay at home and go to sleep with the television turned up loud and pass away in her sleep as she wanted.
She was a good, generous person who wasn't afraid to tell you what she thought. We are all richer having known her.
At her request, there will be no services. Cremation has taken place and she will be interred with her parents in Monte Vista, CO.
