Session E has begun in Antonito

The goals for this week's work is continuing on the rebuild of caboose 5635, cleaning up the CRF area and rebuild 2 trucks to be used on tank cars that are being refurbished. Here are a few shot from the first day sent to me by Don Atkinson.

I have gotten the pictures from Pat Maufrais who is doing the chronicling for this session. This is from Monday.

: As per Coronavirus guidelines, a temperature check is done each morning

: The Monday morning safety briefing has begun

Anyone who registered for the work sessions this summer knows this handbook since you had to read an online version and certify that you understood it.

: The Friends safety rule handbook is noted during the briefing

: Briefing on something we hope is not needed, the Automatic External Defibrillator

Session E Tuesday's photos.
This is the only shot today from work on the 5635 upscale caboose.

: Wiring work is still ongoing inside the rebuild and upgrade of caboose 5635

: Looks like he is grinding off some rust on that piece

Everything else from today involves the work on the new tank car wheel sets.

: Looks like they are guiding in the loader to pick up wheels

: And the loader is now getting that wheel set ready to pick up

The following series of shots shows the work necessary to get a bolster onto the wheel sets.

: The wheel set is now on the assembly track and the loader is being detached

: A side bolster is hoisted up while the Friend is scraping off some rust

: Another angle as they get the bolster ready to install

: Nice shot of the bolster and we can see the work done to get the spring pocket ready

: Applying grease to the axle pocket prior to installing

: The bolster is now being slid into the axle

This series of photos shows how the bearing and its plate are installed into the wheel pocket.

Work continues on rebuilding the trucks on Tuesday.
We start this thread with the installation of the springs into the bolsters.

: The crew is placing a large beam to work the bolster so the springs can be inserted

: Looks like the crew is using a large beam to move the bolster to get the springs into it

: We can see the effort needed to get the bolster ready for the springs

: Work continues on getting the springs into the bolster

This series looks at installing a side bolster onto the truck.

: Cleaning the axle end prior to installing the side bolster

: The axle end is looking better (1 of 1)

: Inspecting the axle hole in the side bolster before installing

: Checking the alignment

: With the help of the loader, the bolster is slipped into place

: A little butt action going on as they force the bolster into place

: Oh, it will go we just know it

: In place the bearing and plates can be installed on this side

With the second bolster in place, the top place can be attached to it.

: With the side bolsters in place the top plate is installed

: One Friend is directing the loader as it lowers the top plate

: The plate takes a little bit of the old muscle grease to line up

: Further work to get the plate into the proper position

.
