Wednesday 7/26/17 Emuse

Unread postby Sharon Evans » Wed Jul 26, 2017 2:37 pm

Well no rain today to spoil the activities going on. Sunny with cloudy periods and temperatures upper 70's for the most part. The most interesting thing going on today was the placing of the air tank into the sand house. The Friends have been working most of the summer sessions repairing the sand house getting it ready to provide sand to the locomotives on a daily basis. Next step, which should happen tomorrow is raising the storage tank for the sand onto the tower from which gravity will allow locomotive crews to fill the sand dome. Keep in mind that this air tank weighs around 800 lbs.

Barry Morris, part of the crew working on the sand house, installs the chains to support the come-along that will be used to raise the tank

7-26-17 Using a fork lift, they move the 800 lb air tank to the boards they will roll it on.jpg
Using a bucket loader with folk attachments and a sling, then get to moving the tank toward the board that will be used to roll it to the sand house

7-26-17 Almost to the boards.jpg
The crew has almost gotten the tank to the board

7-26-17 Rolling it toward the sand house.jpg
The crew now man handles the tank along the boards

7-26-17 The tank is now starting to tip into the pit.jpg
They now have the tank starting to tip over into the pit where it will reside

7-26-17 The comealong is now attached directly to the tank.jpg
The crew has moved the tank far enough to attach the come-along directly to the top of the tank

7-26-17 The air tank is now being lowered into the pit_.jpg
Lowering is begining

7-26-17 Before the tank is lowered the last few inches a plumb bob was lowered from the roof through the pipe hole so the tank could be centered.jpg
Before the tank is lowered the final few inches, a plumb bob was lowered through the hole in the roof where the air pipe needs to go to ensure alignment

Thank you Sharon. I've been wondering how that project was progressing.

Years ago when the Friends were working on that tank, the reason the pipe was clogged up was because there was a rat that somehow got inside the pipe and died, when they applied pressure it shot out the pipe to the sand hopper on the tower. For awhile it was known as the 'rat-a-pault'.

Rich, the current plan calls for it to be raised tomorrow. If I am in Chama will be shooting video of the event.

The newly constructed door for the left side of the car is almost ready to install. The MOW bunk car can be seen in the background.

The windows have been attached to the car. Unbeknown to the crew they would have to remove them for the car to be painted
