K37 #491

Congratulations to the Colorado Railroad Museum for getting K37 #491 back in service. This is only the 2nd K37 to be back under steam since the 1968 abandonment, the other being the C&TS 497. Any plans to get the 497 running again?

497 needs it's 1472--it's not in horrible condition. The only reason it was set aside is because it needed it's 1472.......why they haven't done it by now is a mystery.

That's what I heard. Not in bad shape, but, no immediate need, 483 first, nothing that money can't fix. It's one of the reasons I Powerball. :-)

There's always the ongoing saga of the trailing truck tearing up the track, as well. I've read several stories about that.

Doug, I'm fairly sure the trailing truck problem had been fixed. It'll take younger eyes than mine to search the forums but I believe it was Earl K. that spoke to that.

Not the trailing truck but the pilot was the problem. Corrected by the C&TS shop personnel! It also need running gear work which ups the cost of repair. Plus, not needed with the 36's handling the work load.

I've heard several different versions, including about the pilot truck. Have always been curious about that. I really hate to watch the 490s rust.

Could part of the delay in working on 497 be because of how old the boiler is? Remember that while the running gear was built in 1930 the boiler dates to 1902.
