I saw one of those for the first time up near Alpine Tunnel a few years ago. Had NO idea what the heck it was. In fact, I think it was Barbara that identified it for us after we showed her a photo.

I don't believe we have anything close to that species down here on the Gulf Coast, except maybe the Nutria.

I normally find them higher than here around Chama.

Looks like he's still sleepy from hibernation time. Had to look it up, and surprisingly they say Marmot is considered a giant ground squirrel. Thanks for the pics!!

Thanks Roger for the great pics. Marmots are one of my favorite high country animals. Jason, the closest cousin here in the South Central U.S. is the prairie dog and we have a ton of those around here. Thanks again Roger for the great pictures.

Thanks Steve. We don't have prairie dogs down here on the coast in the piney woods. At least not that I've ever seen. Got LOTS of squirrels though.
