7/31/17 last full day in Chama 216 chase

The morning of my last full day in Chama dawned overcast, which I happen to like for filming. Got down to the yard just as 489 was beginning to get ready. I also saw that the round house was open and asked Avery if I could shoot the 497 and he said OK as long as I did not go inside, or to Quote him, "like the rooster peeking over the fence at the hens". I chased 216 as far as Cumbres.

488 and 463 are resting quietly in front of the engine house.

489 has moved to the pit and is getting its fire cleaned before the run east.

K37 497 rest quietly in the round house awaiting a call which may never come.

Tracy backs the 489 down the main as one of the hostlers wait to throw the switch to the coal dock.

The 489 is now moving forward onto the coal dock lead.

Tracy shows concentration as he moves the 489 forward to the coal dock.

The front end loader adds another scoop of coal to the tender of the 489.

Tracy, who wants a clean locomotive, is washing down the boiler of 489.

As the loader finishes adding coal, you can see the results of the wash down.

Coal bunker loaded, the 489 backs away from the coal dock in a classic rods down shot.

In a time honoured tradition, Tracy oils around on the 489.

Another shot of the Goose 5 as it gets ready to head back to Delores.

The crew is packing up so the goose can be loaded on its flatbed for the tip home.

The trainman is guiding the 489 as it backs onto the train.

The join made, the trainman signals Tracy to stop.

As 489 departs with train 216, the Friends stop their work and wave to the passengers.

489 comes by the wood shop as it gets the train underway.

Cinder Bear gives everyone watching a nice wave as he passes.

The parlor Colorado passes the coal tipple as it leaves Chama.

AS the train moves by the water tank, Cinder Bear is still in the open gon.

489 brings the train out of the Narrows.

The engineer of 489 is concentrating on his charge as it approaches the curve into Lobato.

The train is moving away from the road as it enters the curve to Lobato with the 10 mph speed board visible.

The train is approaching the road crossing at Dalton as it climbs away from Lobato.

The train is entering the S curves.

The train is approaching 3d crossing as it continues up the 4% grade.

The 489 and 1st car have crested the grade as the rest of the train is still on the 4%.

The trainman walks the train to check the brakes while the 489 takes water.

The sign at Cumbres which details what was and is at the summit.

Once back at Chama, I spotted this in the south yard. One of the stock cars repainted RGS red/orange and lettered for the upcoming special in September.
