Why do locomotive tender cars have cupolas? Are they occupied during runs? Sorry to sound ignorant but I'm an aviation guy.

Never a need to apologize for asking a question around here, Lynn. We're all Friends.

Back in the day when Brakemen were required for manually braking trains, the Head Brakemen would ride there so he could keep an eye on the train, be in position to apply brakes, and stay out of the weather.

They are not used today and are maintained merely for historic appearance. Although, I'd pay extra to ride up there if they'd let me. :smiley16:

Thanks Jason, I'd pay extra to ride there too. I would think the liability would be low since it is an enclosed space.

Is it as hot there as it is here? 99 today. Might get as high as 106 next week. Can't wait for fall. Just 3-4 months to go before it cools off...
