After spending some interesting time looking through the team leader reports and the various videos it has come to me that although I’ve been aware of the work done by the Friends volunteers, truly appreciating what they do is hard to grasp without the help of those “visual aids”.
Just knowing what they do is not at all the complete picture and it should be pointed out how these volunteers are having a pretty good time while working hard to get as much done as they can in the one week time frame of a work session.
It should also be pointed out to those of you who are not familiar with the organization how these people not only give freely of their time and sweat, they pay all of their own expenses, including travel to the C&TS RR from all over the country, lodging, food and drink.
Many of the names you see listed are generally obscure even to other Friends members. These volunteers do not do what they do for any reason other than the self-satisfaction they get from seeing what was once a derelict historical artifact restored to its former operating condition. They are the unsung heroes of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.
