What is This?

John Cole found this on the pipe from the Lava Pump House to the Lava Tank. This coupling changes the pipe from 3" to 4". He's assuming it's a check-valve, but would like to know for sure.

Based on the picture and the description, I would say it is a cast iron 3" X 4" swedge (reducer). It looks pretty heavy duty, so it could have been 'repurposed' from some other intended use.
